red envelopes are traditionally given during lunar new year (feb 10th this year) with sweet cash money (not included) stuffed inside. and, they are also used throughout the year for special events like birthdays, weddings, or greasing the palms of business associates. it is traditional to kowtow when receiving a hongbao, and it's often considered rude to open it in front of relatives, so make an excuse to go pee and head to the nearest bathroom to see how generous your uncle was!
